The Book of Joy eBook

For current UC Davis students, faculty, and employees, The Book of Joy is available as an eBook through the University Library. In order to access the eBook, you need to either be on campus, or use the VPN Client if you are off campus.

We especially encourage instructors teaching The Book of Joy to review the following message from the University Library regarding the book's availability:

Greetings. We have become aware of a shortfall of available copies of The Book of Joy, especially in light of the licensing limitations of the eBook.  Here is information on the access we have available and steps we can take to redress this problem: The library's eBook license allows for 3 simultaneous users. A given user can view the book online, which will occupy that spot for the duration of viewing. Or, they can download the book, which will occupy that spot for seven days. There are currently 6 print copies of the book in the collection at Shields Library.

For the eBook license, we propose that students who have been assigned The Book of Joy NOT download the eBook, but instead view it only in order to provide maximum availability. Those who wish to read a print copy should use the library's copies.

We are considering placing print copies on reserveboth the 6 in the collection as well as additional ones for a total of 12. Reserve copies will be available on a reduced loan period to allow maximum circulation of the books. It also is possible that instructors could mount electronic copies of individual chapters on e-reserves if they can justify it as fair use. Interested instructors should contact Matt Conner (mconner@ucdavis.edu). The library is looking into additional measures, such as more free copies from the publisher. If there are additional questions or feedback, please contact Matt Conner (mconner@ucdavis.edu).
